Lawani started to work on Sun Rap in 2016. It spawned after he heard the Acorn Tapes release by Josh Hey 'TWENTYONE'. Josh Hey remixed Desiigner's Panda, which inspired Lawani to make his own by sampling Sun Ra's 'Nuclear War'.

Over the following years, the French-Beninese producer kept working on other songs following the same principle. After Lawani thought he'd lost the original Ableton sessions, he maintained the project under wraps. In 2020 he uncovered an unknown folder which retained the presumably lost sessions. Lawani was able to rework the tracks again. Fast forward to today, after a dinner party around wine and pizza with other Hip-Hop heads, Lawani decides to release the project.

Sun Rap is a love letter to the American Jazz composer, musician and poet Sun Ra and rappers from Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta. Lawani produced the album in Ableton Live 9, using drum samples from Jake One, Klub des Loosers and some from his collection and acapellas from Reddit threads.

The album cover, designed by Lawani, is a collage of several images referenced in the various songs present on Sun Rap. It also references the album artwork of Migos' album 'Culture'.
